Dried-out and clumpy mascara? Don't worry, this post will help you before you throw it out and buy a new one.

Trick 1: Warm It Up

Cold, thickened formula can sometimes loosen back up with a little heat.

  • Fill a cup with warm (not boiling) water.

  • Place the closed mascara tube in the water for 3-5 minutes.

  • Take it out, dry the outside, and try applying as usual.

The gentle heat can help re-loosen the formula just enough to be usable again.

Trick 2: Add a Few Drops of Saline Solution

Contact lens saline solution (not eye drops with medication in them) can help thin out dried mascara.

  • Add 2-3 drops of saline solution into the tube.

  • Close it and roll the tube gently between your palms — don't shake it, which pushes in more air.

  • Let it sit for a few minutes before testing the wand.

This can restore a workable texture for a few more uses, though it's a short-term fix rather than a permanent one.

Trick 3: Try Distilled Water Instead

If you don't have saline solution on hand, a drop or two of distilled water (not tap water, which can introduce bacteria) can have a similar loosening effect. Use sparingly — too much water can throw off the formula and make it clump instead of glide.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't add tap water. It can introduce bacteria, which is especially risky for a product used so close to your eyes.

  • Don't pump the wand rapidly to "fix" it. This is exactly what dried it out in the first place — it pushes more air in rather than loosening the formula.

  • Don't keep reviving the same tube indefinitely. These tricks can extend a mascara's life by a little, not indefinitely — and using expired mascara comes with real risk of eye irritation or infection.

How to Prevent It Next Time

  • Twist (don't pump) the wand in and out to minimize air exposure.

  • Store the tube upright with the cap fully closed.

  • Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight.

  • Replace it every 3-6 months regardless of how much product is left — mascara is one product where "using it up" isn't worth the risk once it's past its prime.
